Hi,
We are Nan and Fabian. Nan is Chinese and I am German. We live in Berlin, Germany. And the friendly yellow mascot is called DouDou
We started this project out of my frustration about the Chinese language learning app landscape. The tedious work of maintaining clean Anki decks, sentence mining and finding level-appropriate audio input got too time consuming and was too hard to automate. Integrating the plethora of half-hearted tools and approaches into everyday busy life didn't work for me. The recent AI slop avalanche of vibe-coded apps made the situation even worse. And most apps out there don't follow even basic learning psychology and neuroscience. Same goes for almost all textbooks and language classes. They feel outdated, old-fashioned and not well structured.
Naturally, in language learning communities, meet-ups, expat chat groups etc., people always talk about the tools they use, compare approaches and share successes and failures. It turned out many fellow Chinese learners shared the same pain about the existing tooling.
As a 码农Code FarmerSlang for a programmer or software engineer, I love efficiency and automation which fits well with Nan's lovable impatience, pragmatic efficiency focus, and her experience designing digital learning systems and curriculums :) Perfect match!
We understand that there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach or tool in language learning and it needs a flexible and diverse approach and tool set to address all different stages of learning and each language has different challenges. With this in mind we decided to build our own learning platform and tooling. Of course this doesn't cover all of what you need to learn Mandarin but it addresses common pain points and 'hitting a wall' moments.
The actual work is up to you, you need to show up every day, improving a tiny bit, painful step by step. Learning a language like Mandarin is hard, there is no easy way. But the right approach and tooling can help to save time and energy, make it easier to keep on track and maybe make it a bit more fun. At least that's what we think.
Learning Mandarin has, after only a few years, completely changed my life. And we want more people to learn this beautiful language and culture! We aim to provide resources for free but we have to cover some server and development costs. We try to keep costs as low as possible.
We are always happy about collaborations, feedback, expanding the network or just chatting!
So much for the cheesy intro, thanks for reading and welcome to DouDou-Chinese!
